There are many options for winter walks in Engelberg. This particular round-tour along the Grotto Trail to "The End of the World" is an easy 2-hour walk and particularly pretty when the sun shines after a fresh snowfall. Even if the fog rolls in, it has its charm. Along the well-prepared trail you pass through a short forested section, but mostly there is lots of sunshine and you are surrounded on all sides by the magnificent mountains of the Central Alps.
Walking past the Engelberg Abbey (founded in 1120) the trail heads into the back of a cauldron to a place nicknamed "End of the World" (Ende der Welt) where a family-run Gasthaus (since 1900) in Horbis welcomes you to a warm meal before heading back the same way or returning along the Bärenbach stream and across the bottom of the ski slopes.
