This winter walk along the Rhone River and the wide open Goms Valley is particularly magical on a sunny day after a fresh snowfall! The trees and the water simply sparkle and lift up the spirits for those who endure the foggy Swiss winters in the lowlands. Even in the high elevations where narrow valleys sometimes see little sunshine for many weeks, the Goms valley is wide and flat and full of sunshine. This also makes it a favourite of cross-country skiers, of which there are hundreds gliding across the landscape.
The trail called the “Rottenweg” starts in Oberwald just west of the 15.4 km long Furka tunnel, and leads you along the Rhone River and through typical Valais mountain villages, all the way to Niederwald if desired, a total of almost 20 km. You can plan your walk for as short or as long as you like, as there are a total of 10 train stops along the Matterhorn-Gotthard line.
For this walk we chose the 9-km section between Oberwald and Münster, a brisk and pleasant 2-hour afternoon walk finishing with a visit to the quaint village of Münster with its shingle-roofed church and old Valais stable-homes, some of which have been renovated with modern interiors. In earlier farming days, the stables were often built above the living quarters, on stilts on wide flat rocks to prevent the mice from getting into the stored hay.
