As far as winter walking trails go, this has got to be one of the best. On a clear sunny day the stark high alpine landscape glitters in its white brilliance against a backdrop of deep azure blue. The trail, which also crosses the frozen Daubensee Lake, is cleared daily when weather conditions are good, and walking is not difficult, especially when walked in the downhill South to North direction.
(Most descriptions of this trail have the origin in Sunnbüel on the North side, but it is substantially more tiring to have to scale the total approx. 500m altitude difference).
Cable cars on both the South side (Canton Valais) and the North side (Canton Berne) provide easy access to this high road, which was an important North/South trade route in the middle ages. Increasing tourism (especially to access the healing baths in Leukerbad) saw passage of many historical figures such as Alexandre Dumas, Jules Vernes, Guy de Maupassant, Mark Twain, Lenin and Pablo Picasso, who also spent nights in the Schwarenbach Lodge, built in 1742 originally as a customs/toll station, and later converted to an Inn.
The Lodge restaurant is also open in winter, and is still very popular especially on nice days, so expect to find many people there especially at lunch hour.
Weather can change quickly in the mountains, so make sure that along with the sunglasses, you are equipped with hat, gloves, and windproof jackets. Because of ever-present avalanche danger, sometimes the northern part of the trail is closed, so check the winter hiking reports, for example at this website: http://gemmi.ch/highlights/winter-highlights/snow-report/?L=2
- We recommend trying to make a reservation at the Schwarenbach Lodge if planning to have lunch there. (0)33 675 12 72.
- From the Leukerbad end station of the Leuk bus, it is only a 10-minute walk to the cable car station, which is actually quicker than waiting for the bus.
