If you are vacationing in the Goms Valley to enjoy the plentiful winter sun and the ample opportunities for winter walking or cross-country skiing, this short round tour takes you about 200m above the valley bottom for a totally different perspective.
The walk to the area above Blitzingen called Chastebiel starts at the South end of the village and ascends on a little-used zigzag road to “Hotel Castle”, from where you get a super view across the entire Upper Goms Valley all the way to the Furka Pass.
Above the hotel, the prepared forest trail heads off Southwest at an easy downward slope to the little hamlets of Ammeren and Wiler. Further on, just above the train station of Niederwald, the trail doubles back and leads back to the town of Blitzingen.
Back in the village, take advantage of something to drink or eat at the very quaint ‘Taverne zum guten Freund’ on the main road.
The Gotthard-Matterhorn train that runs the whole length of the valley from Brig to Andermatt stops at several small stations on the way, and if you would like to do some more walking, the prepared winter trail at the valley bottom runs in both directions. (i.e. a 30-minute NE to Biel or SW to Niederwald).
