Although the San Bernardino Pass Road is closed in winter, vehicles still have access to the Hinterrhein Valley from the Mesolcina Valley via the 6.5-km San Bernardino Tunnel. Near the South entrance to the tunnel lies the little ski town of San Bernardino, under the watchful eye of the distinctive pyramid-shaped house mountain called Piz Uccello.

The 4-km long winter loop trail called Sentiero Pont Nef is described as the most varied and interesting of the various winter trails accessible from the village. The first part of the walk is along the Pass Road to the Campground about 1 km from the Information Center and Bus Stop in San Bernardino. Up to here the road is cleared, but the real winter trail starts here, following the pass road to the Pont Nef bridge from which the trail gets its name. The "New" Bridge was built in 1864 to replace the dilapidated old bridge named for the Sardinien King who participated in its financing at the time, because this trail was an important trade route from Italy to reach Northern Europe.

The trail back to San Bernardino winds through pretty high moor landscape and forested areas with views South into the Mesolcino Valley.

For those wanting to walk longer, there are other loop trails all accessible from the Village, for example the 6.5-km Sentiero Pian Cales on the East side of the village from where you get some really nice glimpses of Mount Uccello.
