This winter walk from the village of Arvenbüel to the pass at Vorder Höhi offers lots of sunshine and loads of views of the mountains that ring Lake Walensee. It is a pleasant option for a sunny afternoon walk, and is popular with city folk from nearby Zurich, so one can expect quite a crowd on a Sunday afternoon. But the trail is wide and there is lots of room for everyone, even at the top on the sunny terrace at the Vorder Höhi Farm.
The farm owners have a nice business going here in winter, offering a nice selection of grilled sausages, soup, cold meat and cheese platters, and hot and cold drinks which they prepare in the barn and serve on a self-serve basis.
A short walk past the farm takes you to the actual pass, which served an important purpose in the 1970's when the road up from Weesen to Amden was closed due to danger of a rock slide. The Swiss military quickly created an access road from the North side, which in the meantime is really only used by hikers and bikers. From this vantage point you get a sweeping view into the Toggenburg Valley and across the Churfirsten mountains, and to the Alpstein Massif with its highest peak, Mount Säntis (2500m) and its weather station.
An additional plus: There are large parking lots just below Arvenbüel so for those who prefer excursions by car instead of public transport, this is an ideal destination.
On a sunny day Sundays or holidays expect to be joined by many people on this trail. // The forest East of the walking trails (i.e. snowshoe trails) are areas designated for protection of wildlife and you may not leave the trail there.
