This is an easy walk around the entire perimeter of the pretty Lake Greifensee near Zurich, a large nature reserve for birds and other small animals. Much of the lake's perimeter consists of reeds and marshes, sometimes large expanses of them.
Most of the trail is a wide gravel lane with no difficulties to walk. All around the lake are several restaurants, wharves for lounging and fishing, lake accesses for swimming, picnic areas for barbecuing. The Greifensee Boat Association offers tours on the lake, stopping in Greifensee, Uster and Maur among others. Furthermore, ZVV offers a ferry service between Maur and Niederuster.
The tour can easily be split into two sections, starting and ending in Maur or Greifensee. Of particular interest on this tour is the small town of Greifensee (popular on a Sunday afternoon) and the nearby marsh where remains of ancient pile dwellings were found (one of 12 Unesco World Heritage Sites in Switzerland).
The quaint town of Greifensee with its castle (destroyed in 1444 and rebuilt 1520) and its very unusual gothic church dating from 1330 // Marsch landscapes mainly on both ends of the lake // Unesco World Heritage Site Pile Dwellings at Storen
