Starting in the village of Neirivue in Canton Fribourg, this leisurely hike in the rolling alpine foothills takes you through a nice variety of forest and pastoral landscapes, and all the while you are accompanied by the pleasant sound of cowbells. This is very fitting because of course, this is one of Switzerland's largest cheese-producing regions.
Never too much uphill or downhill, the climax of the tour is when you round the bend in the final section of forest and get that glimpse of the magnificent Gruyères Castle. Built in the 13th century, it was the seat of a long line of counts of Gruyère until it was declared bankrupt by the last count in 1554. The cities of Freiburg and Bern then divided the property, and a long line of nobles inhabited it until the state of Freiburg bought it back in 1938 and founded a museum.
To get to the castle and the medieval town perched on the hill, a short climb is required, totally rewarded by the quaint village with its cheese shops, chocolate factory, restaurants where you can enjoy meringue and thick Gruyère cream. And of course the wonderful views into the Haute Gruyère Valley. When you've had your fill of strolling this medieval setting, a short walk back down to the train station ends the tour at the "Maison du Gruyère", the large cheese dairy where you can marvel at the rows and rows of huge cheese wheels and learn a bit about the manufacture of the famous Gruyère cheese.
NOTE: The old town near the castle is also the home of the HR Giger Museum, for fans of the "Alien" series of movies and unusual metal sculptures which combine human forms and machines.
The museum houses the largest and most impressive collection of the artist's paintings and sculptures, furniture and film designs, dating from the early 1960's till the present day.
Gruyères is a popular tourist destination, so expect lots of people, even in the winter months // If you enjoy the sound of cowbells, then the hike should be done ca. May or later (no cows in in the fields in April)
