This easy hike near Les Avants above Montreux is best done in May during the height of the flowering of fields of narcissi, for over a century the symbol of Montreux and the areas above the Vaud Riviera.
There are several trails where these fields of narcissi can be admired, sometimes looking like vast terrain covered in snow, but this one near Les Avants has the most numerous locations where the flowers can be enjoyed.
The website narcisses.com offers a pretty accurate forecast of when the flowers are expected to bloom in each of the trail areas, so you can plan your tour based on the area where the flowers are at the height of their bloom.
In Les Avants is a small funicular which you can take to Sonloup to start on the "Chemin des Narcisses", or you can hike up the 180m ascent which adds about 30 minutes to the tour.
Besides the stunning blooming fields, there are some very nice views over Lake Geneva and the peaks of the Dents du Midi in the Valais Alps, as well as Rochers de Naye and Dent de Jaman across the Gorge du Chauderon toward the East. Most of the trail is on pleasant forest and mountain paths, so worth a walk at any time if vacationing or living nearby.
Tickets for Sonloup Funicular must be purchased at the Ticket Machine at Les Avants Train Station (50% with GA). // Hiking up instead of taking the funicular adds 20-30 minutes // Check the website narcisses.com for the state of the flower blossoms. The fields are checked daily and the website is updated regularly as to when the flowers are budding, blossoming, or expected to finish blooming. The first and most abundant blossoms are in Les Avants, but there are other trails at higher elevations where one can see the flowers later in the season.
