At the very back of the beautiful Anniviers Valley is a dammed lake of such intense turquoise it takes your breath away. The milky colour of the Moiry Lake is a result of minerals from the glacier of the same name, a massive tumble of ice towers at the South end of the lake, a glacier you don't see until you have crossed the dam on the start of the hike around this stellar lake.
There are several options for walking around this lake: Higher trails on both sides about 300m above the lake, or a trail and a paved road close to lake level. Or a combination of the two as in this case, the trail that takes you first to the Alpage du Torrent upper plateau, from which one can walk over the Torrent Pass to the West into the Val d'Hérens. On this upper pastureland is a small pond worth a visit before heading back down to the Moiry Lake.
Once you reach the back of the lake, a short uphill hike takes you to the parking lot (yes, cars can drive all the way to the back) from which you cross a large, multicoloured flat expanse between the glacier moraines, where the waters from the glacier meander their way to the lake. The trails are not marked on a map, but not difficult to find. Slightly uphill through a jumble of rocks and you come across the Glacier Lake at the glacier tongue, with the fabulous backdrop of the Moiry Glacier.
If you are brave to cross the bridge of rocks in the river, you can make it a round tour to return to the parking lot, and from there an easy walk next to the road takes you back to the dam. Leave yourself some time to enjoy the sun on the restaurant's terrace before heading back down toward Grimentz.
The dam can be reached by car on the mountain road above Grimentz (can also drive to the back of the lake). Post Bus runs only from mid-June to mid-October and only twice per day each direction (check schedule carefully). There is also a separate shuttle from Zinal, 4x per day.
