The New Aspi-Titter Suspension Bridge near Bellwald

Bellwald - Ried - Schranni - Aspi-Titter Bridge - Fieschertal

This tour starts in the pretty and typical Valais vacation village of Bellwald (accessed by cable car), which is worth a look before starting out on the hike.

From here you ascend for a little over an hour at a light and steady pace along the East side of the Fiescher Valley until you reach the trail markers that announce the descent to the Aspi-Titter bridge. Before making the descent, though, it is worth taking the 20-minute detour to the Schranni look-out point. The view to the glacier tongue is remarkable, and you can see the suspension bridge from here, whereas you barely see it on the descent.

The trail to the bridge is incredible: there are cement stairs and iron steps built into the cliff face with hand-rails and chains at the tricky places.

Crossing the suspension bridge is as stunning as usual. This bridge, only recently completed (2016), is 160m long and hangs over a gorge 120m deep. The bridge was a long-awaited connection between the hiking areas of Goms and the Aletsch Arena and makes it so much easier to cross the gorge!

For those who have time, an hour detour to the Berghütte (open from June to mid-October) affords views directly onto the the Fiescher Glacier (requires another 150m ascent). Returning then past the Titter Aerial Cableway (possibly no longer in use) you arrive at a lovely open area on an elevated rise, with views down the Fiescher Valley all the way to Fiesch. A steep descent over a rocky trail takes you to the river from which you can walk to the destination of Fieschertal in 35 minutes on either side.

Since there are two long and steep descents involved, it is recommended to do this hike after a dry period, and not directly after rain. This tour might look dangerous, but it is not. It has been specially designed to connect the Goms and Aletsch hiking areas, and there are lots of families with kids on the trail.
