This is a hike worth doing primarily for the views and for its remoteness, so don't expect many people along the way***

The trail ascends and descends on typical Ticino Forest trails, often paved and supported with large flat rocks, and often also steep (especially the descent). In between Cima di Dentro and Cima di Medeglia, the trail follows the North side of the mountain on a wide dirt road which is even paved along a short stretch, always slightly uphill but with rewarding glimpses into the Leventina Valley and the Magadino Plain.

The exertion is rewarded on the Cima di Medeglia Peak with 360 degree views stretching from Monte Gazzirola and Monte Bar in the East with a glimpse of the Denti della Vecchia, to Monte Generoso and Lake Lugano in the South, the Monte Lema range in the West, the Maggia Delta at Locarno, and Bellinzona and the Leventina to the North.

The first part of the descent is a real alpine trail, which quickly changes to Ticino mountainside, with one single quaint Monti (Troggiano) along the way. There is an Osteria in Canedo, but the village lacks charm. Other than this, the start and end villages of Isone and Medeglia are worth a look.

This tour can also be done as a round tour, as the trail back to Isone along the river just below Medeglia takes only 40 minutes to walk..

*** Note, this area is training ground for the Swiss Military Grenadier Division. The soldiers are on home leave on the weekends, so we recommend this hike on the weekend, as one may run into trail blockages during shooting practices during the week.

- This is a training area for Swiss Military, and during the week there is the possibility of trails being closed due to shooting practice. Recommended is to do this on the weekend, although the buses don't run that often (check bus schedule carefully). - If coming by car, the route can also be done as a round tour, either connecting by bus, or walking along the Isone River back to Isone (40 minutes). - Although the map shows 3 hours 30 minutes, the tour takes 4 hours.
