This mountain hike on the East shore of Lake Lugano starting in Arogno and ending at the Customs Museum at the Italian Border is a good option for vacationers in the area to do an actual mountain hike without the exertion of large ascents or descents typical of the Ticino mountains.
The bus from Maroggia takes you right up to the last stop in Arogno at the base of Monte Generoso, and after visiting the quaint village and its beautiful Renaissance church San Stefano, a slight ascent to above the village is then followed by a descent through thick forest to the village of Pugerna. Along the way there is the occasional view to the South of the lake and the stunning line of mountains to the West which comprise the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps.
After Pugerna, a short descent through Caprino with views of Monte San Salvatore brings you to lake level where there are several typical Grottos along the rest of the trail where you can choose to have something to eat (check ahead on their websites for opening times).
The trail parallel to the lakeshore is not made for sauntering as one might think, but rather takes you up and down past interesting cliffs through the forest, returning every now and then to the lakeshore to another building or Grotto until you reach the final clearing right next to the Customs Museum.
The tour ends with a boat ride back along the same shore-line and back to the city of Lugano.
The various Grotti (Restaurants) along the lakeshore // Customs Museum at the end of the trail // Views of Monte San Salvatore, City of Lugano, Lake Lugano and even the Monte Rosa Massif and the Fiore di Pietra on Monte Generoso // Boat ride back to Lugano.
Hotel Panorama below Pugerna // Several Grotti all along the lakeshore
Things to Note
There is a large stretch of forest between Arogno and Pugerna. Ideal for a summer hike as it offers a lot of shade. In late Summer or Fall/Winter it is recommended to start this hike later in the day as there can be shade on this side of the mountain until noon // At lake level the trail goes up and down over many stone steps, and can be slippery when wet. There are many railings set up although not really necessary. // The lakeside Grottos are often closed in winter, so check the websites before planning a meal there.
