Hiking season in the Surselva between the Oberalp Pass and Disentis is probably pretty much finished by mid-October, but the unusually long warm weather in Autumn 2015 was ideal for this relatively non-strenuous hike along the Southern flanks of the mountains, giving us the most of the sun exposure for this time of year.

Panorama views up and down the Surselva Valley from the Toma Lake Basin (Source of the Rhine) in the West to way past Sedrun in the East are bound to be even more spectacular in spring or summer.

Starting point of the hike is the train station at Tschamut, which lies almost 50 m higher than the tiny hamlet itself. From here you can follow the paved zigzag road to the scattering of vacation homes at Milez, or if you are adventurous, take a shortcut up the hill along the "unofficial" hiking paths.

From Milez there is a direct route down the paved road eastward to Sedrun, but the more interesting path heads North, and then eastward across a large moor area. This is a section of the Route 85 "Senda Sursilvana" which you can follow all the way to Sedrun, but we chose some alternate, sometimes unmarked trails to follow a lesser-trodden route, involving fewer upper and downhill sections. Either way, the route from Milez to Sedrun offers many grandiose views Eastward along the Surselva Valley.

Our tour can best be repeated by following the downloadable map.
