This easy hike from Schleitheim to Hallau in the very North of Switzerland near Schaffhausen is actually a section of Regional Trail No.34: The Klettgau-Rhine Trail.

The tour starts and ends with a visit of two typical villages in this area, with their wonderful half-timbered buildings. After a section of vineyards heading out of Schleitheim, the next three kilometers follow the Swiss-German border marked frequently by border stones, before ascending to the ridge that overlooks the Blauburgunder Region of the Klettgau: A stunning vista of vineyards above Oberhallau and Hallau. This is the largest connected winegrowing region of German-speaking Switzerland. The main grape grown here is the Pinot Noir, known locally as Blauburgunder.

The main landmark in the center of the vineyards is the St.Moritz Church (1491), called "Bergkirche" or "Mountain Church" because it sits prominently on an elevation, which can hardly be called a mountain. Starting at the church are several themed trails through the vineyards, which are especially stunning in fall when the vines turn gold and red.

In Hallau is a wine-museum, a must for all who are interested in the history of viticulture in the Schaffhausen area. Furthermore, in summer, the town of Hallau offers the experience of sleeping in wine barrels!
