This Panorama Round Tour high above the motor-vehicle-free village of Braunwald definitely delivers what it promises!
The tour starts at the top station of the Grotzenbüel cable car line (it’s a 10-minute walk from the funicular to the base station) and requires steady uphill walking through forested terrain for the first 45 minutes, but when you reach the most northern point of the Chnügrat ridge (i.e. before doubling back onto the next ridge) the stunning views northward up the Linthal Valley and onto Oberblegi Lake make all the hard work worth it! The viewpoint is not obvious, so look for a spot where you can move off the trail a bit.
After doubling back, the walk up along the next ridge (Seblengrat) offers spectacular views both left and right into two valleys with particularly stunning rock formations to the West. The next hour of walking is on a fairly level narrow mountain path which takes you through a tunnel (look for artwork), past the Gumen Restaurant and along the flank of the mountain, always with Mount Ortstock in your sights up ahead.
Once in the shadow of Mount Ortstock, the trail descends back to Grotzenbüel Station via the Ortstockhaus and a lovely moor pond just below it, just inviting you for an afternoon nap in the sun.
For those who don’t like to walk downhill, you can ride the gondola lift down again (that makes a total walking time of 3 hours), or head down the trail to Braunwald just before coming to the station. This adds 45 minutes of walking time and another 300m descent, but saves on the cost of a cable car ride!
