Even though the Klausen Pass is not a high pass (1948m) it receives so much snow in winter that the pass road is usually closed by November and reopens only late in May. The winding roads on both sides are motorcycle heaven (as are most of the Swiss Pass Roads) and the Pass itself is the starting point for several very nice hikes, including the popular Schächental high trail on the road side of the Schächen Valley.
Less well-known are the hiking trails on the opposite side of the valley, from which you can walk down into the Schächen Valley or all the way back into the Brunni Valley, always with fantastic views of the Klausen Road high across the valley, or to the Uri Alps in the Reuss Valley to the West. There are also some fantastic cliff formations here.
Only 1 hour and 20 minutes from the Pass is the Oberalp Cable car, one of the older open cargo cable cars converted into a passenger car. It descends to the valley near the magnificent Stäuben Falls. From Äsch (a collection of chalets near the falls) to Unterschächen is an additional leisurely hour to walk.
The ride saves a potentially steep downhill walk, although this walk is well worth it as you follow the stream that feeds the Stäuben Falls, and pass below the magnificent cliffs that you have seen from above. The view down the entire Schächen Valley as you reach the bottom of the descent is also one that should not be missed.
To recap: The hike takes 2 hours and 30 minutes if you take the cable car from Oberalp into the valley, or 3 hours 30 minutes if you walk down into the valley from Oberalp.
This Panorama Round Tour high above the motor-vehicle-free village of Braunwald definitely delivers what it promises!
