To encourage people to connect with nature in an urbanized area, several communities in the Rontal Valley between Lucerne and Rotkreuz just recently (May 2018) completed a very nice 13-km high trail that runs from Honau to Ebikon. The trail consists mostly of forest or farm roads, with a few brand new accesses through the forest (signs warn that surefootedness is required, but the paths, though narrow, are not difficult).
Along the way are several biotopes of national importance for proliferation of amphibians, several picnic spots perfect for barbecuing, playgrounds, a Kneipp Garden (opens in May), and several lovely farms offering natural biological products in their little shops. One farm even has a small bistro patio!
Along the way you can see all across Switzerland's Central Plateau, and if the air is clear, a fabulous view of Mount Pilatus is had, especially at the start of the trail in Honau. The trail is great for families and can be accessed from several bus stops at the valley bottom. Flyers can be obtained along the way, especially at the farms, but also at the community halls in the towns below.
Three short steep segments through the forests have been newly created to complete the trail. As these sections are fairly new, the trail is not yet well-worn. //
The Kneipp Garden costs 5 SFr. for adults and 3 SFr. for children. This is for upkeep of the facility. //
This tour is very good to do with children
