In the hidden valley of Isenthal just off Lake Lucerne near Flüelen there are many options for some very spectacular walks and hikes, ranging from short informational walks for children, to 7-hour mountain tours.

A popular 4-hour hike is the one that that starts at the summit station of the St.Jakob-Gitschenen cable car and crosses the Hinter Jochli Pass then continues to Klewenalp on Lake Lucerne, from where you descend with another cable car to Beckenried.

Our hike is a variation on this one, with the destination of the pilgrim village of Niederrickenbach in the Engelberg Valley. The main reason for this choice is that the descent with the cable car is free for holders of the SBB GA pass. But the small village with its cloister always offers a sense of peace an idyll after a long walk.

The hike is a typical Alp hike with some steep uphill and downhill portions and a crossing of a saddle from one canton to another. Any exertion is quickly forgotten when you can stop every few minutes to refresh your spirit with the gigantic views. Reaching the highest point and descending to the next valley always brings that sense of achievement.
