This panoramic trail high above Lake Uri is a spectacular mountain hike with no great difficulties. This official regional trail is called "Wildheu Pfad", which translates to "Wild Hay Path". The reason for this is that the meadow grass on the very steep flanks of this concave recess below the spectacular Rophaien crags are actually harvested.
The trail starts after a cable car ride to the mountain village of Eggbergen, and ends on the high plateau called Ober Axen, which is the location of a farm and restaurant, accessed only on foot or by the four-person cable-way (built in 1998) operated by the restaurant owner. This latter is an experience in itself -- you must not be afraid of heights and small spaces to ride it!
This tour has an interesting variety of forest and mountain trails, but because about half the trail runs along the steep flanks, you should be vertigo-free. A couple of narrow passages are secured with cable railings. Even on a warm day, there are plenty of shady passages. But start early to avoid the mid-day heat. The spectacular views are also best enjoyed earlier in the day.
At the small farmhouse on the Frankenalp, where you get a particularly stunning view South into the Reuss Valley, you can purchase refreshments, and then maybe have a nice lunch at Ober Axen before descending to Flüelen with the cable car.
Interesting note: The mountain farmers require this hay for their cows for the winter (a cow requires 40 kg of wild hay per day, and the farmers can harvest about 200kg per day, for which they require special spiked shoes to prevent slipping on these steep flanks). Without the hay from these steep flanks the farmers would not have enough winter hay for their cows.
Superb views over the Uri Alps, Reusstal Valley, Isenthal Valley, Seelisberg, Lake Uri // Tiny "Museum" about halfway, it is an open shed with a couple of old photos showing how the hay was harvested. ATTENTION: there is a low cable here where the hay is transported, watch your head. // If you are lucky, you might see the farmers cutting the hay on the steep meadows.
ABSOLUTELY NO BIKES ALLOWED ON THIS TRAIL // Both the Eggbergen and Ober Axen cable-ways generally run every 30 minutes. For larger numbers of people they will run the cable-car more often. Eggbergen costs 12 SF. one way (GA and Half-fare not valid) and Ober Axen costs 7 SFr. (let them know at the restaurant that you want to descend, and you pay the owner just before he starts the cable car. IT IS IMPORTANT TO CLOSE THE DOOR COMPLETELY after leaving the cabin. If hiking the other way around, you have to press the telephone button till you hear a loud tone, then let them know you are coming up, get in the cabin and close the door properly.
