This short ridge hike requires a bit of endurance to get to it, but it is more than worth it!

The "Untere Balm" and the Klausen Pass Hotel are more well known as the starting points for the popular "Schächentaler High Trail", a 22-km trail from the Klausen Pass to Eggbergen along the North side of the Schächen Valley. Perhaps less familiar, although also popular is the ridge to the North of the Hotel, an interesting 30-minute walk among bizarre rock formations and vertical cliffs, with expansive views North into the Bisis Valley and South into the Schächen Valley..... but you have to get there first!

The 380m climb to the narrow ridge above the hotel takes just a little over an hour, and simply requires one to "stick with it" which is actually not too difficult as you can stop as often as you like to marvel at the view of the Schächen Valley and the Glarus Alps to the South -- especially the Clariden and Schärhorn (shaped like scissors), the fabulous curvy Klausen Road below, and the Brunni Valley to the West with the Large Windgällen and its 7km wide North Wall.

Once you reach the ridge, you are more than rewarded for your effort by the surprise view to the North, the wide flat Glattalp and the largest Karst Region in Switzerland (stretches from here to Muotathal). The 30-minute walk to Ruosalper Chulm is exciting and breathtaking and an experience not soon to be forgotten.

The trail down to the Untere Chulm lake and partway back to the bus stop is a bit difficult to maneouver because of its loose rocky surface, but slow and steady is the trick, and in no time you reach the wide road of the Schächentaler High Trail to return to the Hotel, or to catch a bus at the Untere Balm stop if desired.

Things to Note
Although it might look tricky to walk along this ridge, it is not particularly dangerous. You just have to take care where you step. If coming by car, you can park at the hotel and easily do this round tour and return to the car, even in later fall if there is no snow. The bus to the Klausen Pass only runs from end-June to mid-October, though.

Rating: 6/6

(d.h. Rundtour wie beschrieben ist besser).
