The Rämisgummen is considered one of the most beautiful Alps in the Bern region. It stretches across an area of 130 ha and offers summer grazing for 220 cattle at an altitude of approx. 1200 metres above sea level.

For only a few days every spring right after the snow melts, the Alp transforms into a vast carpet of thousands and thousands of white and purple crocuses, a natural phenomenon that attracts many flower lovers (especially as they can come by car to just North of the Alp and so avoid all the uphill / downhill on foot!). Apparently the sheer numbers of purple crocuses concentrated in one space such as this is very unique.

There are many options for hiking to the Rämisgummen Alp, and this version starts in Schangnau at the foot of the Hohgant mountain range, climbs to the top of Mount Wachthubel, and heads North on the Napf “Grenzweg” along the border of the Cantons of Bern and Lucerne. All along the way are panoramic views across the Entlebuch region of Canton Lucerne and the Emmental region of Canton Bern. On a clear day you can see the Bernese Alps just past the distinctive outline of the Hohgant range.

All along the trail from the summit of Wachthubel to the Rämisgummen Alp there are clearings strewn with crocuses as well, long before reaching the popular vast meadows.

After lingering in the magnificence of the crocus-strewn meadows, you can refresh yourself with a drink or homemade Rösti at Erika’s guesthouse just off the path to the North, before heading down the sometime gradual but sometime very steep path to the Steibach Valley before emerging just East of the Kambly Cookie Factory in Trubschachen (free cookie samples as a reward for a successful hike!)

*** Note: Depending on weather, the crocus fields last only for a very few days. You can inquire at the community of Eggiwil at Tel: 034 491 93 93 for the progress of the blooms. Or check the website for Erika's Bergrestaurant.

Grandiose Aussichten aufs Emmental und Entlebuch. Aufstieg ist steil aber lohnt sich....

Rating: 5/6
