This little round tour is a perfect hidden gem, situated just off the Susten Pass road near the pass, and makes for a wonderful break when driving for hours along the Swiss Pass roads. The entire four kilometers take about 1.5 to 2 hours to hike, and present to the viewer a wide variety of beautiful Swiss landscapes: A glacier lake, a glacier, an upland moor of national importance sprinkled with sparkling ponds and lakes, alpine vegetation, stunning views into the Haslital Valley and the jagged peaks of the Fünffingerstock Massif and Gadmerflue. And most of all, an opportunity to stretch the legs and experience the Swiss Alps right up close without a lot of effort!
This tour takes you first to the Stein Lake from which you can view the Stein Glacier as you walk along the trail to the back of the lake (perhaps you might also see people walking across the glacier). Back on the road and a short walk to the South brings you to a jumble of boulders which is the junction for the uphill climb to the wonderland that is the Seeboden Nature Reserve. Up here the views are magnificent, as the trail wanders through a landscape of ponds and upper lakes. In this part of the nature reserve it is not forbidden to leave the trail, so short detours to the ponds are permitted.
The downhill stretch on which you return to the Steingletscher parking lot or bus stop is steep at places, so care must be taken on the descent, but it is not particularly difficult. Before crossing the bridge to the road, you pass an Alp Dairy where you can buy locally made cheeses.
"Small but sweet" is what you can call this tour, but the hiking season is short up here, from about mid-June to mid-October. For sure the Post Bus only runs in this period, and only twice per day in each direction, so if coming by bus, plan the trip in advance.
Lovely views accompany you all the way on this idyllic hike around the Göscheneralp Lake, starting at the natural earth dam, going past the Damma Glacier, across a glacier... more >>
