A classic winter hiking trail for young and old! This 2.5 to 3-hour winter walk on the motor vehicle–free Melchsee-Frutt high plateau offers sparkling snowy vistas in all directions and an abundance of sunshine.
Heading up by gondola cableway from Stöckalp, the Melchtal Valley opens up wide behind you. Once at the top and headed toward the lake, the vista is simply stunning.
This excursion takes you from the idyllic vacation village of Melchsee-Frutt past two frozen lakes, and ends at the restaurant and chapel in Tannalp, situated in a hollow.
After refreshments at the restaurant, you can return by the same route to Melchsee-Frutt, or take the alternate trail at the west end of Lake Tannensee, i.e. at the dam, so that you get a slightly different line of sight for the way back.
ALSO: Instead of taking the cableway back down to Stöckalp, you can rent a wooden sledge and ride down the longest sledge run (8 km) in Central Switzerland!
