Ridge hikes are always popular, and this round trip from Schönengrund in the Appenzell to the Hochhamm Ridge offers some fantastic panorama views across the Alpstein Massif and Mount Säntis in the South all the way across Lake Constance in the North. Furthermore, the hike up to the ridge is not too strenuous, and depending on weather conditions, might also be possible to do in the winter months.
There are many various trails going up to the ridge and back down (some more direct) but this suggestion is a bit longer to allow for more time along the actual ridge trail.
Half-way across the ridge you can enjoy a coffee or something light to eat while admiring the view of Mount Säntis. The Bergrestaurant Hochhamm claims to be open every weekend during the year, and during the week if the weather is good.
There are a few steep spots on the way down (slippery when wet) so care must be taken. A map is advisable as the trail markers point to the most direct route down, whereas it is definitely worth taking a longer more round-about route through the lovely Appenzell hills back to Schönengrund.
