Barely noticeable on the West Side of Lake Uri is a cleft in the otherwise steep cliff face, a gorge opening out to a beautiful upland valley totally hidden from view in the Reuss Valley. Hard to imagine a farming landscape up there, where until 1901 the inhabitants had to use footpaths and ladders to scale the cliffs to get in and out of the valley.
The steep zigzag road, built in 1901, was blasted out of the rock face, at places the rock so low the bus barely makes it through. The road is narrow and cars are warned not to use it at the time the bus does its run, which is only about 4 times a day.
This tour starts at the final bus stop, the valley station of the St.Jakob-Gitschenen cable car, and the lovely trail follows first the tumbling river, and then climbs along a farm road to the highest point (100m ascent) for a super view over the village of Isenthal, passes right through several farmsteads, and then heads down into the village, where you can admire the signature carved wooden crosses in the cemetery….. and the front paws of the last bear shot in the valley in 1820 displayed in a shop window.
A short piece on a paved road leads to a meadow and then a forest trail to a lookout point from which you can see right down the Reuss Valley across Flüelen to Mount Bristen, before heading down a steep but surprisingly comfortable trail with here and there a view North across the lake to Brunnen.
Once arrived at Isleten (a popular starting point for windsurfers and sailsurfers, of which you will see many crossing the lake here), you can take the boat to Brunnen if the wind is not too strong, otherwise take the bus (they run only every 3 hours) or walk to Flüelen (7km).
