Ancestral Seat of one of Europe's Most Powerful Families

Brugg - Habsburg Castle - Scherzberg - Wildegg Castle - Wildegg

Publié le 08.04.2017 par GabrielleMerk | Date du tour: 29.03.2017 | fois favorisé (3)

This easy hike is ideal for early spring especially when the leaves are just starting to emerge from the trees and bushes in the forest.

It is a historical tour with visits to two of the Habsburg Castles: The first one which carries the Habsburg name is the ancestral seat of the Habsburg family, one of the most powerful families in Europe over many centuries, and the second, Castle Wildegg, was built by the Habsburg Family because of its strategic position on the Aar River, but sold to the Family Effinger of Berne in 1483 after the Habsburgs lost their Swiss Holdings.

The Habsburg property started out as a small wood home in 1020, built by Count Radbot of Klettgau and his brother-in-law Bishop Werner von Strassburg, later expanded into what was known as the "Front Castle", then the "Rear Castle" was built as the front one fell into ruins and the family gained in stature and ambition. Count Radbot took on the name Von Habsburg because that was the name of this property.

The large tower in the Rear Castle is open to the public (no charge) although the rest of the building consists of a restaurant and dining halls for rent. There are many information placards explaining the rise to power of this family which amassed holdings all over Europe, and whose Empire was known as "An Empire on which the Sun Never Sets" and even though they maintained their territories for hundreds of years, they lost most of their holdings in Switzerland to the Swiss in the wars of 1386, 1415 and 1460.

From here the tour takes you across meadows and forests to a lookout point above the Aar River near Schinznach Bad on the Scherzenberg, where the micro-climate is such that Spring is slightly more advanced here.

More pleasant forest trails take you to the castle at Wildegg, a beautiful building with extensive grounds including vineyards and rose gardens, and also a volière. The total grounds cover 100 acres with vineyards, forests, and farmlands, plus 37 buildings including a farm shop where you can buy their organically-grown produce. The castle and rose gardens are open to the public after April 1st.

Eine schöne nicht sehr anstrengende Wanderung über schöne Blumenwiesen und zu geschichtsträchtigen Schlössern. Bei Schloss Wildegg lohnt sich auch eine Besichtigung!
