Alp-Style Macaroni & Cheese high above the Schächen Valley

    Biel/Kinzig - Selez - Fleschsee - Hüenderegg - Eggbergen

    Published on 22.12.2015 by GabrielleMerk

The sunny terrace of the Biel-Kinzig ski area above the Schächen Valley invites you to some nice winter walking, as there are many cleared and tended walking and snow-shoe trails.

If you don't want to tramp uphill to Wiltschi from the Biel cable car station, you can start by taking the cleared road toward Ratzi and then turning left toward Ruogig/Eggberge just after the base of the chair lift.

Otherwise the snow-covered summer trail goes straight up and then to the left near the Edelweiss hotel. In less than an hour you have reached the back of the Selez Valley where there is a lovely family-run alp restaurant with a cozy dining area and also a great view terrace. After the best Alp-style Macaroni & Cheese (secret recipe!) with apple-sauce or pork steaks, you can enjoy a few ZZZ's in the sun in their reclining chairs.

Depending on snow conditions, you can walk on to toward Eggbergen via the little Flesch Lake and from there down through the forest, or to the left up to the Hüenderegg look-out, which is recommended. You get fantastic views all the way South over the Uri Alps and Northwest to Lake Lucerne.

From here a bit of "wading" might be required, or you can walk back down to the Fleschsee junction or even back to the Ruogig cable car station.

**Note: if there has been little snow and warm days, then the surface of the trail can be quite icy.

    Route Description

00:00 Start uphill from the Biel Cable Car Station in the direction of Eggbergen. This is actually the summer trail and may required wading through some snow.

00:15 Arrive at the chapel. A few meters further along the trail is the intersection where you go left, continue on toward Eggbergen.

01:00 Arrive at the Alpstübli Selez where you can enjoy a home-cooked meal on their view terrace.

01:20 Arrive at the trail marker at Fleschsee. Before continuing on in the direction of Hüenderegg take the small detour to see the little lake just a few meters around the corner.

**Note, there are two options for getting to Eggbergen from here. Take the longer one via Hüenderegg if the trail permits, because it is a look-out point with a fantastic view.

01:40 Hüenderegg summit look-out point. From here continue to Eggbergen. Here also you might have to step in previous footsteps.

02:30 Arrive Eggbergen Cable Car Station to descend to Fluelen.
