Aubonne Arboretum National Park, from Bière to Yens

Bière - Aubonne Arboretum - St.Livres - Yens

There is a special narrow-gauge train called the BAM (Bière-Apples-Morges) that services this area around Morges, and the ride to the start of this tour in Bière at the Jura foothills, where the Aubonne River has its source, is a nice one through the agricultural landscape above Lake Geneva.

The main highlight of this tour is the Aubonne Valley Arboretum, a 200-hectare National Park where about 4000 different varieties of trees and bushes from all over the world (temperate zones) thrive. These trees have been planted here for scientific research and species protection, including some very old and rare sorts of apple trees that are no longer grown elsewhere.

The Arboretum is reached in about an hour from Bière, mostly on a pleasant forest trail along the Aubonne River. There are many trails, picnic areas, ponds and a lake in the park, perfect for an afternoon stroll. The Wood Museum at the Information Center in the Park has displays of thousands of woodworking tools used by all kinds of professions. The museum has restricted opening hours, so you need to check ahead.

Once you have left the park and forest area you are in the vineyards above Lake Geneva with views of the lake and the French Alps. The beautiful countryside makes up for the mostly paved road which continues through St.Livres and to Yens train station.

On the way back to Morges, you can get out at the Vufflens-le-Chateau Station for a close-up look at the mighty castle, unfortunately not open to the public as it is privately-owned. If you still have time, there is a hiking trail to the East of the castle which follows the Morges River right down to the Morges train station, an additional 4 km or 1 hour or so pleasant walk.
