From Monti to Monti in the Gambarogno

Monti di Piazzogna - Monti di Vairano - Monti di Gerra - Monti di Sant'Abbondio - Monti di Caviano - Dirinella

The small villages (called “Monti) along the West flank of Monte Gambarogno served in earlier times as the summer lodgings for the farmers. In more recent times the homes have been converted to comfortable summer homes, some of which are powered only with solar power. There are no roads here and the only access from village to village or from valley to these locations is via foot-path.

The start of the approx. 4-hour hike is easy to access by bus, and the well-laid trail leads through woods, across streams and past waterfalls from one clearing to the next (the villages are about 1 hour apart) with many splendid views of Lago Maggiore, Locarno and Ascona on the Maggia Delta, and all the Sopra Ceneri mountain ranges hiding the various side valleys such as the Verzasca, Maggia, Onsernone and Centovalli. From each village a path descends to the town of the same name along the lake below.

The last village just before you reach the Italian border to begin your descent back to the lake is a jewel called Monti di Caviano, also known as Centocampi (“One-Hundred-Fields”), the only place in Ticino where you can still find old stables with straw roofs. In the past, farmers used the straw from the rye they grew on the 12 hectares of terraced fields nearby (this huge clearing gave the town its nickname). The only source of electric power in Monti di Caviano is from solar power.

The 800m descent to Dirinella is pretty steep in many places, so the going can be a bit slow. Solid shoes are a must. A walk through the village of Scaiano about 15 minutes before arrival at the destination makes for a nice little break. From here it would also be possible to take a bus back.
