    Hike Around Monte Gambarogno

Alpe di Neggia - Monte Gambarogno - Alpe Cedullo - Indemini

    Hike Around Monte Gambarogno

Alpe di Neggia - Monte Gambarogno - Alpe Cedullo - Indemini

This tour, described on the Swiss Mobility website as the “Alpe di Neggia Trail” would better be named “Monte Gambarogno Trail” as it is really that, a walk up and around Monte Gambarogno.

As is often the case in the Ticino, if there is little or no snow, you can still do some wonderful mountain hiking till late in the year, as we were able to do on this sunny mid-December day while most of Northern Switzerland wallows in thick fog.

With the opening of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel, the Ticino and its mostly better weather in winter becomes more readily accessible for people living in the Zurich area. In particular, this remote valley near the Italian border, between the Gambarogno and Tamaro-Lema ranges, is better accessible for a day trip. The ride up by bus from Magadino on Lago Maggiore is an experience in itself, taking over an hour along steep hairpin turns to this beautiful sunny upper valley.

The hike is not a difficult one and affords fantastic views especially toward Eastern Ticino and the Maggia Delta, and all the way to the Monte Rosa Massif and the highest peak of the Swiss Alps: The Dufour Peak.

Along the way you can enjoy refreshments and local cheese at the Alpe Cedullo Farm (open May to October) or have your picnic at the 14th century Sant’Anna Oratorio (its hermit rooms now converted to a hostel).

Arriving at the end of the tour in the village of Indemini at the Italian Border, it is of interest to note that this is the only traditional Ticinese settlement to be built entirely of stone quarried from the site itself. There is a lovely restaurant with a view terrace on the main road, but it is also worth walking through the steep and convoluted alleys of the village that hangs on the slope below the main road.

Note: There is a nice option to continue walking along the Eastern flank of Monte Gambarogno instead of descending into Indemini, for people who prefer to finish at their starting point. The trail goes up to the left before the descent to Indemini, and requires 1 hour 20 minutes from there to walk back to Alpe di Neggia. It is an interesting trail along cliff faces and across rock slides. This full tour takes about an hour longer and requires another (total) ascent of about 200m.

    Route Description

Starting at Alpe di Neggia there are a handful of trails leading to the summit of Monte Gambarogno. One of them goes straight up the hill to the cross, one is an unpaved road to the right that joins the main trail later on.

The main trail is between these two, this is the one we walked, but expect shade on the North Side this late in the year (the one straight up the hill has the most sunshine).

00:00 Start at Alpe di Neggia and follow the trail to Monte Gambarogno.

00:35 Reach the junction of the trail at the Northernmost side of the mountain. Take the left trail to Monte Gambarogno.

01:05 Reach a building on the West side of the mountain, near the cross. There is a path here that doubles back to the cross for the best 360 deg. views of the region. From the cross, you can return to the main path or for a more interesting hike (and more sun in winter) continue along the ridge to the peak of Monte Gambarogno.

01:15 Reach the peak of Monto Gambarogno. From here you can see the trail that descends to Alpe Cedullo to the West. To get to the trail you have to double back below the building and zigzag back down to the main trail.

02:10 After a descent of 450m, partly through forested areas, you reach Alpe Cedullo. From here follow the trail marker to S.ta Anna.

02:20 Reach the clearing where stands the little church Sant'Anna Oratorio. Continue toward Indemini, but make sure to keep on the upper trail. From here the trail winds through some nice mountain trails with glimpses for the rocky East Face of Monte Gambarogno.

02:45 Reach a trail-marker / junction in the trail where you now have the option to descend to Indemini (25 minutes) or walk back to Alpe di Neggia (1 hour 20 minutes) along the Eastern Flank of Monte Gambarogno. The latter requires an initial ascent of about 100 m before continuing just slightly uphill back to the starting point.

    03:15 Reach Indemini OR.

04:00 Reach starting point at Alpe di Neggia.
