From Stels to St.Antönien via the High Moors

    Stels-Mottis - Stelsersee - St.Antönien

The hills in the Prättigau region of Switzerland (near the border to Austria) are full of soft moor (peat bog) landscapes including a very pretty lake called the Stelsersee (left-over from glacial retreat) which apparently is the highest altitude waterlily lake in Europe.

Trails through the peat bogs are nicely prepared with boards for crossing, to make walking easier and to protect the landscape. Nevertheless, the ground can be wet and marshy in many places, especially after long periods of rain.

There are a couple of steep uphill sections but rewarding because there are lots of wonderful views of all the surrounding Alps, especially to the craggy mountains forming the border to Austria on the East side.

From the starting point at the Gasthaus Mottis on the Stelserberg (where the food is very good and reasonably priced) you can take the cleaner and more direct route via a paved road to the little Lake, or a more varied trail through lush vegetation along the East side off the hill. (After so much rain this spring, it was very muddy and difficult to walk, and therefore recommended only after longer dry periods). Near the lake is another restaurant with great views of the Schesaplana peaks, but a popular one on Sundays.

This tour can also be done in the other direction. The bus ride to or from Stels-Mottis is an interesting one as the small Post Bus navigates many hair-pin turns on a single-lane road.
