Aclatobel Forest Reserve in the Safien Valley

Safiental (Carfil) - Aclatobel Reserve - Rhäzüns

Published on 06.08.2016 by GabrielleMerk - Tour Date: 24.07.2016

The Aclatobel Forest Reserve in the Safien Valley is 365 hectares of untouched forest where trees may grow as nature intended, and unique ecosystems flourish. No trees are cut down here and fallen trees are not removed, so there is old forest with a huge variety of trees, some quite rare like the European Yew. This area is a study in how an untouched forest grows and copes with the changing landscape created by churning streams and waterfalls, crumbling cliffs and sliding slopes.

The hike to and through the Reserve on the East side of the Valley (there is also a large part on the West side although less accessible) is a relatively easy hike with only a couple of narrow sections. Along the way you pass through tunnels and along cliff walls. The views into the steep ravine and Northward along the Safien Valley are quite spectacular. Across the valley you can see the road from Versam to the back of the Safienvalley.

Once out of the Reserve area, the landscape turns into butterfly-filled meadows and sections of forest. The only options to reach public transport are to walk back the same way to the starting point, or out of the valley to Versam or to Rhäzüns. Our selected tour to Rhäzüns was mostly through forest (some sections with lots of roots) and only a couple of grandiose views to the Rhine Canyon. The alternate route to Versam takes about the same amount of time, but is mostly along paved roads.

A point to note: Access to the Safien Valley with public transport (train from Chur and bus from Versam) is a wonderful experience in itself as you travel through the beautiful Rhine Canyon with view of the fantastic cliffs as you ascend the winding road by bus.

    Route Description

00:00 From the Bus Stop called Carfil, walk along the road in the direction of Bonaduz. The road takes you across the Egschi Dam to the other side of the valley (approx. 15 mins). Continue along the forestry road up the hill.

00:45 Reach the information board at the start of the Forest Reserve (unfortunately the information is only in German). Here the trail turns from a forestry road into a mountain trail and winds along the steep cliffs.

01:30 Reach the first large meadow after the ravines. Here the Reserve is finished.

The rest of the hike passes through a couple of large meadows but then mainly through forested areas, an additional 2 hours and 30 minutes to Rhäzüns. An alternative would be to return through the Reserve back to the starting point. Otherwise, continue toward Bonaduz.

01:45 Reach the paved road near a collection of small wooden homes. Continue along the paved road toward Vorderhof.

02:00 Just before the small group of homes called Vorderhof (the trail marker reads "Scalms, Vorderhof" a trail goes up the hill on the right, follow this trail in the direction of Rhäzüns.

02:30 Just after a short steep section you reach a road at a hairpin turn, continue up this road. About 5 minutes later you reach a large meadow called Prou Grond with a superb view to Rhine Canyon at the entrance of the Safien Valley. At the end of the meadow is a trail down to the left. Follow this trail (at the trail marker it would be in the direction of Bonaduz).

02:50 Arrive at the start of a small paved road. About a minute later at the hairpin turn, a trail goes off to the right. Keep following this trail to Rhäzüns, about 1 1/4 hours through the forest. There are a couple of junctions where the side trails take you down to Bonaduz, if you prefer. Total time is about the same.

04:00 Arrive Rhäzüns village outskirts. From here it's another 10 minutes to the train station.
