Panorama Views from Mount Rooterberg near Lake Zug

Udligenswil - Michaelskreuz - Meierskappel - Buonas

Stage 11 of the National Route Nr.3 "Alpine Panorama Trail" is a 30-km stretch from Zug to Luzern.

Along this stretch is a lovely 10-km trail that goes across the top of the Rooterberg, a low long hill to the West of Lake Zug. We often think we must head into the high mountains for panoramic views, but this short easy trail offers more than enough views. It's especially nice in spring when the fruit trees are blooming and the cows have just been let out of the barns onto the fields and the first sounds of cowbells welcome the Swiss spring season.

The tour can be started on either end but we chose to start in Udligenswil as the uphill section is shorter and not at all strenuous. Once at the top you get a panoramic view of the hills from Mount Zugerberg and Wildspitz in the East, to the two Mythen, Mount Rigi, the Central Alps, Mount Stanserhorn and the mighty Mount Pilatus to the South.

The trail alternates between meadow and forest trails with some rural paved roads. There are many farmsteads along the way and some even sell honey and cheese. There is lots of variety and the trail is not difficult.

Main point of interest along the way is the chapel at Michaelskreuz. This is a well-known and recognized look-out point for the Zug area, with lovely views South across lake Zug to the Uri Alps, with Mount Rigi dominating the scenery.

Legend has it that in the year 600 the Archangel Michael appeared to a young boy and requested he erect a cross here. Records show that in 1436 a wooden chapel was built on the site of the cross, and later, around 1800, the stone chapel was built.

There is also a Gasthaus on the Michaelskreuz farmstead, where one can stop for a drink or a meal.
