A Hidden Gem of a Lake: Spilauersee

Summit station Chäppeliberg/Spilau - Schön Chulm - Alpe Selez - Ruegig (Brügg)

Published on 11.01.2016 by GabrielleMerk - Tour Date: 22.06.2014

The Riemenstalden Valley is an idyllic side valley of the Reuss Valley in Canton Uri, reached by a switchback road from the tiny town of Sisikon on Lake Uri. The valley itself is worth a drive, but a trip up to the Spilau Alp with the privately run cable car from Riemenstalden-Chäppeliberg offers many unexpected surprises.

For starters, the 7-minute ride up in the open air 4-seater cable car offers spectacular views across Lake Uri and Seelisberg to Lake Lucerne, Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi, and also of the Fronalpstock / Chlingenstock ridge. Just behind the summit station is a small shop where you can buy the cheese produced on site at the Spilau Alp, and also have something to eat on the terrace. On the hill just above the station is the Brother Klaus Chapel originally established by the Furrer Family, and recently upgraded.

The 45-minute hike to the little gem of a lake passes through lush meadows filled with alp roses, herbs and a large variety of alp flowers. The Furrer Family who have been making alp cheese in the summer for generations allow their cows free grazing up here. The abundance of aromatic and wholesome herbs give the milk a special flavour. The milk is processed fresh every day and made into the specialty cheese called "Hay Cheese". This and other cheeses can also be purchased at the Spilau Alp near the lake.

In all directions the stunning geological formations feed the senses. It's quite unlike anything else, and offers a feast for the eyes at every bend of the path.

After reaching the saddle 300m West of the lake, the 20 minute detour to the cross on the look-out point is definitely recommended, for the 360-degree views across the Uri and Schwyzer Alps.

On the descent toward Eggbergen and the Schächen Valley there are a variety of options for shorter or longer routes. The route toward the Biel-Kinzig Station also passes by the Alp Selez mountain restaurant, and provides an additional 45 minutes of walking past the Ruegig station. Alternately at a fork in the trail one can head to the right to the Eggbergen cable car (descends to Flüelen).

Total time options, including detour to the look-out would be (approx.):

    • Chäppeliberg/Spilau to Ruegig station: 3 hours
    • Chäppeliberg/Spilau to Biel-Kienzig station: 3:45 hours
    • Chäppeliberg/Spilau to Eggbergen station: 3:45 hours

    Route Description

The route can be walked in both directions, but if using public transport care must be taken on the Sisikon side as the Post Bus officially runs only twice per day in either direction (reservation required). The Chäppeliberg/Spilau cable car is privately run and holds only 4 people, and is very popular so expect a 1/2-hour wait especially on nice days or Sundays. The bus from Brügg to Altdorf/Flüelen runs more frequently and people who cannot be in Sisikon at 7 a.m. might prefer to do this hike in the opposite direction.

For this tour we started in the Riemenstalden Valley.

00:00 Start at Summit Station of the Chäppeliberg/Spilau cable car. Follow the trail to Spilauersee at the trail marker.

00:40 Arrive at the lake. To get to the Spilau Alp Restaurant you can return on the trail a bit and head to the left to come up from behind, or continue along the right side of the lake and come up from the front.

00:50 Arrive at Spilau Alp to taste the "hay cheese" that they make on the premises. From here head along the trail uphill to the West of the lake, in the direction of Schön Chulm.

01:30 Reach the summit of the saddle. From here it is worth taking the 20-minute side trip to the cross at the rocky outcropping for a 360-degree view. Then continue in the direction of Schön Chulm.

01:50 Arrive at Schön Chulm (a farm). Continue in direction of Ruegig Bergstation.

02:05 Arrive at fork of trail where the right hand fork takes you to Eggbergen Cable Car station via the little Flesch Pond, another 1 h. 10 mins. from here. This tour continues on the left trail toward Ruegig Station.

02: 20 Arrive at Alp Selez Restaurant. From here it is another 15 minutes to the Cable car Station at Ruegig.

02:35 Ruegig cable car station (takes you down to Brügg where you can catch a bus to Altdorf).

If you are still wanting to walk more, another 45 minutes along this road takes you to the Biel-Kinzig cable car which also goes down to Brügg.
