Roundtour from Lungern to the Brünig Pass and Back

Lungern - Obersee - Schäri - Brünig Pass - Lungern

Published on 15.06.2016 by GabrielleMerk - Tour Date: 22.08.2013

It is hard to believe that there is such an interesting hiking option so close to a popular and well-traveled pass road! And yet you are immersed in the peaceful countryside for most of the journey.

This round tour near the base of Mount Wilerhorn has so much variety that it’s a real pleasure to do: Alpine meadows, forest trails, old mule tracks, an idyllic little high moor alley overgrown with ferns and lined with moss-covered walls, views of the Bernese Alps and Lake Lungern, and several picnic spots along the way. The entire area has important botanical value as well (lots of medicinal herbs grow here).

The final approach to the Brünig Pass road is a short section of steep gravel road which can prove to be slippery. Also, at some places the trail is not well marked (it helps to use a GPS locator with the map) but other than this the tour is not difficult.

On the way back from the Brünig Pass the trail follows the busy road for a small stretch before heading back through the forests and meadows along the railway track. Before heading down the paved road back to the train station in Lungern, you pass the little mountain chapel (built in 1760) on the hill where there is also a playground and a little restaurant. At this location you get a very nice view of Lake Lungern and the Lungern Valley.

Interesting note: The original church in Lungern was swept away by a flood in 1887 and only the original 14th century tower still stands at the North end of the village. The new and prominent neo-gothic church built in 1891-1893 stands on a hill in order to prevent a similar disaster. This church has similarities to the Mother-of-God church in Lourdes.

    Route Description

(This is an attempt to describe the route but there are some places where the trail is not well-marked so it helps to use the SwitzerlandMobility map with a GPS locator to keep on track).

00:00 Start at the train station in Lungern and follow the trail markers through the town toward the lake and to Obersee.

00:15 Arrive at the Beat Chapel in Obersee. Continue along the road parallel to the lake until you reach the stream, turn left and head toward the picnic area called Walchi.

00:45 Arrive at the picnic area (Walchi) and continue up the hill through the forest in the direction of Rüti and Schäri.

01:05 Emerge from the forest near the road, then turn right and up the steps and head back into the forest.

01:15 Arrive at the clearing called Rüti.

01:20 Arrive at a junction in the forest, take the right hand trail (NOT in the direction of Letzi) and continue until you reach a road (about 3 mins). A few meters ahead is a picnic hut on the left hand side. Turn left onto the trail and continue toward Sewli. The trail goes uphill through a small fern-filled alley. Keep an eye out for the trail markers (red/white marked posts) as at some places here they are difficult to find. Keep to the right when you get to the clearing.

01:40 Marked trail heads into the woods on the right.

01:55 After a short uphill stretch through the forest, reach the road that comes up from Rüti. Stay on this road for about 5-6 minutes until the trail marker that points to the left (direction Seewli). A forest road follows the cliff walls which abound in flowers.

02:05 Reach the Sewli Trail Marker, turn left and continue until you have to pass through a style on the right and are faced with a long uphill stretch. This takes you to the base of Mount Wilerhorn and at the top to the left is the Mountain Alp called Schäri.

02:25 Arrive Schäri. Continue straight into the woods, from here it is all downhill through forests, meadows, and toward the end a steep and gravelly path. The views of the Alps make up for this last piece.

02:55 Arrive at the Brünig Pass train station. Continue a short piece along the road until the trail heads to the right. Continue in the direction of Lungern, always following the railway tracks until you come to a junction in the road (paved). Keep right. This paved road eventually joins up to the railway track again.

03:35 Arrive at the Burgkapelle (Chapel). Continue along the railway tracks toward Lungern.

04:05 Arrive back at the Lungern Train Station.
