Clariden High Rim Trail at the Klausen Pass

Klausen Pass - Gletscher Seeli - Gemsfairenhüttli - Fiseten Pass

    Published on 18.12.2015 by GabrielleMerk

The Clariden High Rim Trail from the Klausen Pass to the Fiseten Pass takes 3 hours to walk along the direct route, but there is a hidden glacier lake at the base of Mount Clariden which is more than worth a detour.

The hike starts at the Klausen Pass which can be reached both from Flüelen in the West or Linthal and Urnerboden from the East. (When coming by bus from the West, the bus makes a 40-minute stop at the Klausen Hotel/Restaurant [Balm] before continuing to Urnerboden -- you can stop here for something to eat or start the hike from here, which adds about 1.5 km to the total route).

Whether starting in Balm or at the Klausen Pass, follow the trail marker in the direction of Fisetenpass, and about 40 minutes from the the Klausen Pass is a small sign pointing up the hill to the right (main trail goes left) that reads simply "Gletscher Seeli". From here it's only another 10 minutes to where you can get a glimpse of this little gem of a lake.

If you are adventurous, you can weave your way over the rocks and boulders to the shore of the lake for a bit of a rest before climbing back up to join the trail to the East. (There are white/red/white markers on the rocks to find the way back to the trail).

The rest of this lovely high ridge trail with its accompanying views of the Urnerboden Valley continues on a good mountain trail with a few ups and downs and one tricky part secured with cables for support.

At the Fiseten Pass is a cable car to take you down to the village of Urnerboden, or for those who like downhill hikes (this one is very steep, 750m) it takes just a little over an hour to reach the main road and the bus stop at Urnerboden Sonne.

Interesting note: Cows have the right of way in this the largest of the high alpine meadows in the Alps, and you often see automobile traffic backed up while waiting for the curious cows to get off the road! 40 people live here year-round, and 1200 cows are in pasture during the summer months.
